The modular smartphone for a greener world

The Fairphone 5 impresses with its special modular design and improved repairability with ten interchangeable components. By using fairly mined materials such as Fairtrade gold and recycled raw materials, Fairphone helps to improve working conditions along the supply chain. Photos: Fairphone

05.03.2024 - Fairphone embodies a revolutionary approach that goes beyond mere products. The Amsterdam-based tech company offers modular smartphones that are easy to repair and recycle. Behind this is a philosophy that emphasises the circular economy, resource conservation and transparent supply chains. We take a look at the inspiring story of Fairphone and how the company is leading a sustainable revolution in the electronics industry.

Fairphone is a smartphone based on a modular principle. This means that the devices have a modular structure. This means that individual components such as the screen or battery can be replaced separately without having to replace the entire phone. This approach extends the lifespan of the devices, reduces electronic waste and facilitates future upgrades. Essentially, Fairphone offers a sustainable and repair-friendly smartphone solution. The company also sees itself as a movement that is committed to a fairer electronics industry and has established itself as a pioneer in terms of sustainability and social responsibility. With an innovative business model based on a circular economy, transparent supply chains and resource conservation, Fairphone pursues a unique corporate philosophy.

Fairphone started out as a pioneer for ethical and sustainable electronics production with the Fairphone 1. The further development of the concept from Fairphone 2 to 5 consistently emphasised the modular principle. The product portfolio has also been expanded: the wireless earbuds and the charging box are made from 30 per cent recycled plastic. Individual components can also be ordered separately. More than just a smartphone

It all began in the halls of the non-profit Waag Society, a research institute in Amsterdam known for its innovative strength. Here, in the midst of a creative environment, the idea was born to develop a phone that was not only technologically advanced, but also produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way. After two and a half years of successful planning and research, the team took the plunge into the entrepreneurial world in January 2013 and founded Fairphone B.V. With initially just seven dedicated employees, the mission was launched to create a phone that is not produced at the expense of people and the environment. The number of employees has since grown to more than 140, most of whom are based in Amsterdam, the heart of this inspiring movement.

But the challenges of such an endeavour are enormous. Producing a phone made exclusively from fair trade raw materials is a complex task that has not yet been fully resolved. Nevertheless, the goal is clearly defined: Fairphone wants to develop a mobile phone that combines as many positive examples of fair production as possible. This is not an easy path, but the company is determined to take it.

Most of the Fairphone's production takes place in China, a global centre for electronics manufacturing. Despite the geographical distance, Fairphone endeavours to ensure that its production facilities meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. In view of its own responsibility for the life cycle of its products, Fairphone has also implemented systems for recycling. A take-back system in the Netherlands allows customers to return their old devices, while projects such as "Closing the Loop" bring electronic waste from Africa back to Europe to be properly recycled and reused.

The evolution of a sustainable phone

The Fairphone portfolio has evolved steadily since 2013. The FP1 marked the beginning, followed by the pioneering FP2, the first modular smartphone. With the FP3 and FP4, the company continued its efforts to improve the hardware and software while adhering to ethical and ecological standards.

The launch of the Fairphone 5 in 2023 underlines the continued innovation and commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Compared to its predecessors and many other smartphones on the market, the Fairphone 5 is characterised by its ease of disassembly. Ten components can be replaced, including the casing cover, the battery, the USB-C port and even the cameras and display. In particular, the fact that the display can be removed with just eight screws makes repairs a comparatively effortless task. If a component is defective, users can easily replace it without having to replace the entire device. This not only reduces electronic waste, but also helps to extend the lifespan of the smartphone.

Supply chains and resource conservation

Fairphone pursues a business model that is based on a circular economy and promotes transparent supply chains. The company focuses on creating a positive impact along its entire supply chain, from mining to the life cycle of its products. In mining, Fairphone strives to source materials from responsible sources to support local economies.

Fairphone is actively committed to recycling and resource conservation to promote a circular economy. Through its recycling programme, Fairphone strives to reuse valuable materials and reduce the waste generated by electronic devices. In addition, the company works with partners to improve recycling efforts in countries facing e-waste problems.

The need for an ethical phone stems from the desire for fair products and a change in the relationship between users and their products. As widely used devices, smartphones provide a platform for discussions about the origin and manufacture of electronics. Fairphone strives to promote these discussions and create a model for an electronics industry based on social and environmental values. Fairphone has established itself as an innovative company in the electronics industry, driving positive change towards a more sustainable and ethical production of smartphones. Through its unique corporate philosophy, innovative products and commitment to the circular economy and transparent supply chains, Fairphone is setting the standard for the entire industry and inspiring consumers worldwide to take action for a fairer future.
