Gifts with impact: sustainable ideas for the climate
At a time when awareness of the challenges of climate change and the protection of biodiversity is growing, more and more people want to actively make a positive contribution to preserving our planet. Sustainable gifts that not only bring joy, but also benefit the environment and the climate, offer a good opportunity to do so. We show how gift-giving and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Sustainability and environmental protection are issues that are close to more and more people's hearts. Many also want to act responsibly when giving gifts. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to give sustainable gifts. First things first: when selecting organisations and projects, it is important to pay attention to transparency, reliability and demonstrable success to ensure that the donation is actually used effectively and has a positive impact on the environment and climate. The Gold Standard is considered one of the strictest certification standards for climate protection projects worldwide and only certifies projects that demonstrably contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and at the same time promote sustainable development in the project regions. The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is another internationally recognised standard for the certification of climate protection projects. Both standards are verified by independent third parties and thus guarantee that the projects supported meet high standards of environmental integrity, social responsibility and transparency.
Animal sponsorships: supporting habitats
Animal sponsorships are a way of protecting endangered species and giving a special gift at the same time. Nature conservation organisations such as the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union Germany (NABU) or the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF) offer symbolic sponsorships for a wide range of animals, from cats of prey to fascinating marine mammals and endangered bird species. Sponsorships support specific conservation projects that aim to protect the animals' habitat, combat poaching and defuse conflicts between humans and animals. In addition to direct species conservation, many sponsorship programmes also make an important contribution to environmental education and the involvement of the local population. As a sponsor, you usually receive a certificate, regular reports on the conservation projects and the sponsored animal as well as the certainty that you have made a concrete contribution to the conservation of our unique wildlife.
Tree planting campaigns: a green gift
Another sustainable gift idea is tree planting campaigns or tree sponsorships. Organisations such as PrimaKlima, Plant-for-the-Planet or the Forest Enterprise Foundation offer the opportunity to plant trees in various regions of Germany and the world and thus actively contribute to reforestation and climate protection. With PrimaKlima, for example, you can have trees planted in the Harz Mountains, the Black Forest or Costa Rica and receive a personalised certificate with the coordinates of the tree. Plant-for-the-Planet makes it possible to plant trees in Mexico, Kenya or Spain and thus not only protect the climate, but also create jobs for the local population. The Stiftung Unternehmen Wald offers tree planting campaigns in Germany, where you can give the gift of planting one or more trees and, if you wish, take part in the planting campaign yourself.
Another option is a symbolic tree sponsorship, where you do not directly plant a tree, but support the maintenance and preservation of forests. Such sponsorships are offered, for example, by the German Forest Protection Association or NABU.
Experience gifts in nature
A gift does not always have to be material to be sustainable and meaningful. Gifts of experience can also make an important contribution to environmental protection by raising awareness of the beauty and fragility of nature. A guided walk through the forest with an experienced forester, where you can get to know the interrelationships of the forest ecosystem up close, or a voucher for further training in the field of forest conservation, for example, is offered by Wohlleben Forest Academy offers.
There are also opportunities for experience gifts near Glückstadt and in Schleswig-Holstein, for example a guided hike on the Wadden Sea coast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This gift offers the opportunity to explore this fascinating habitat and learn more about the special adaptations of animals and plants to the tides. Another idea in the region is birdwatching: the Elbe estuary and the offshore islands are an important resting area for numerous migratory birds. Take a boat trip to discover the fascinating birdlife of the Elbe marshes. The trip is accompanied by a regional ornithologist who provides information about the flora and fauna. In autumn, tens of thousands of migratory birds from Scandinavia and Siberia rest at the mouth of the Oste and Elbe rivers on their way to their wintering grounds.
Get creative with upcycling workshops
In upcycling workshops, participants learn how to transform seemingly useless objects or materials into new, useful and decorative items. For example, you can build stylish furniture from old wooden pallets, create unique lamps from disused bicycle parts or sew fashionable accessories from fabric remnants. Upcycling workshops teach valuable skills and encourage you to look at things in a new, creative way. A gift idea for anyone who likes to get creative. The "Wälderhaus" in Hamburg is offering several upcycling workshops as part of Silvia von Pock's "Meander Valley" exhibition. An upcycling market is also being organised where exhibitors offer products made from old materials.
A visit to the organic farm
A guided tour of an organic farm provides important insights into sustainable agriculture. Many organic farms open their doors and offer exciting guided tours, workshops and hands-on activities. For example, you can help harvest fruit and vegetables, feed and pet the animals or take part in a tasting of the farm's own products. The Kattendorfer Hofabout 50 kilometres from Glückstadt, is an organic farm with a focus on educational work. It regularly organises events and seminars on topics such as organic farming, permaculture and sustainable lifestyles. Guided walks through the farm's diverse cultural landscape are also offered. Here you can experience first-hand how organic farming works and the benefits it has for the environment, animals and consumers.
In a world where sustainability and a sense of responsibility are becoming increasingly important, meaningful gifts like these are a wonderful way to convey values, encourage people to rethink their behaviour and do something good together.
