Sustainable travelling: The world's first SDG hotel in Vienna

The Boutiquehotel Stadthalle in Vienna's 15th district is not only a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, but also a pioneer when it comes to sustainability. Here, tradition merges with modern environmental awareness: self-sufficient in energy, specialising in upcycling and offering a tempting organic breakfast, this hotel is the first of its kind to commit to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We check in and take a closer look at the hotel concept.

What began as the vision of a committed hotelier has developed into a pioneering concept. With her boutique hotel owner Michaela Reitterer proves that innovative thinking and hospitality can harmonise perfectly. Her latest innovation: 17 individually designed rooms that bring the UN Sustainable Development Goals to life.

Sustainability at the heart of the hotel

Boutiquehotel Stadthalle is more than just a place to stay - it is a statement for sustainable travel. Back in the 2000s, Michaela Reitterer caused a stir with her zero-energy balance sheet concept. But she wanted to go even further: Today, the entire hotel is guided by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations (UN). These goals are not only guidelines for governments and companies, but also the inspiration for the hotel's innovative concept.

What are the SDGs?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) comprise 17 global goals to be achieved by 2030, including the eradication of poverty and hunger, gender equality, climate action, sustainable cities and responsible consumption and production. The SDGs take a holistic approach by combining social, environmental and economic aspects. Their goal is nothing less than the transformation of our world - towards a fairer, greener and more liveable future for all.

Sustainability you can touch: The SDG rooms

At Boutiquehotel Stadthalle, each of these 17 goals is made tangible. The hotel's rooms have been thematically designed and each represents one of the SDGs. From "climate protection" and "gender equality" to "life under water" - each room tells its own story and encourages guests to reflect on the importance of the sustainability goals. Particular emphasis was placed on upcycling: Furniture and decorations come from recycled materials and were made in collaboration with the social enterprise gabarage. This creates a unique atmosphere that combines creativity and environmental awareness.

A green oasis in the centre of Vienna

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Boutiquehotel Stadthalle offers its guests an idyllic oasis of calm. The green inner courtyard invites you to relax, while beehives buzz on the lavender roof and photovoltaic systems generate sustainable energy. Even the exterior façade of the hotel is covered in greenery and contributes to improving the microclimate. By deliberately dispensing with minibars in the rooms, the hotel saves 21 tonnes of_CO2 every year - an impressive contribution to climate protection.

Indulgence without compromise: The organic breakfast

Sustainability doesn't stop with food. At Boutiquehotel Stadthalle, every day begins with a breakfast consisting exclusively of organic and regional ingredients. Particularly noteworthy is the Fairtrade coffee, which was transported by sailing ship - a symbol of the conscious use of resources. Vegan options and homemade specialities round off the menu. When the weather is nice, guests can enjoy their breakfast on the terrace and take in the green surroundings of the hotel.
